Gardener of South Central L.A. Grows Gardens for Free

Ever heard of the entire communities in Eastern Europe that have massive gardens in place of pools? Where communities come together to grow and share their own food? Well the North America may be finally catching on.
Gardening and eating your own food was just brought to the suburbs of South Central LA by a Ron Finley, a guerrilla gardener. He says in a TED talk "that when kids grow their food, they eat that food" It’s no surprise but most cities don’t boast healthy food as the norm for inner-city folk.
After having a warrant for his garden that he planted on city land outside his house, on the strip of land between the sidewalk and the street, Ron has gone on a spree of planting gardens wherever he sees a need. With planting a garden at a homeless shelter in downtown LA, to helping the members of communities appreciate the beauty in planting and maintaining your own food supply.
Finley says that the city of LA owns 26 sq miles of vacant lots, which in equivalent to 20 central parks and could grow 724,838,400 tomato plants. He asks why the city would not allow garden planting to be alright.  He’s got my attention and it seems like its how the rest of the world has enough to eating rural areas. So why don’t we try this. Start planting your own gardens and you’ll see the health benefits, environmental benefits and cultural benefits that having your own garden gives. My family has already started our own garden and it’s extremely beneficial.
Ron Finley has more to say on urban gardens in his TED talk here.

U.S. Supreme Court Rules That DNA Cannot Be Patented

If you have been following the genomic revolution which has been going on in the world, or even anyone who believes in human rights, civil rights, and other human liberties should read this blog. What happened Thursday in the U.S. Supreme Court is probably one of the most significant leaps in the genomic revolution in making the well-being of every individual more important than corporate revenue.
It regards anyone who believes that corporations should not be able to patent the human genome.  The Billion dollar corporation Myriad Genetics had the patent over the tests as well as the genes that determine the BRCA1 gene, better known as the breast cancer gene and may now be faced with rendering those patents void.
Justice Clarence Thomas who wrote the decision did so under patent laws, which say that 'patents cannot be put upon the laws of nature, natural phenomena and/or abstract ideas.'And I believe that to be a truthful.

For over thirty years the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has been giving out patents to the human genome, and now with this new ruling many, if not all patents on the human genome will be reversed and given back to the rest of the scientific community for future progression into the genes and the tests.
As awesome as this recent ruling looks, it is not as great as it seems. The court didn’t rule against synthetic genes and method’s, because in theory and practice, Myriad genetics and other such companies can still patent the ways in which the genes and tests are being done, which could significantly slow down potential progression of the genetic revolution.
Here’s the a take on the recent ruling from CBC: http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2013/06/13/sci-scotus-dna-patent.html

Kanye West’s New Album Yeezus

Kanye West is a man of many talents outside of his well known rapping, singing, and song writing career he is also a fashion designer, film director, and philanthropist. And with all this hype around him lately with dating reality TV star Kim Kardashian, and giving birth to a daughter yesterday, one would think he has a full schedule.

But not for Kanye, with a leak of his new album Yeezus reviews are pointing out that Kanye has had time to create another work of genius.

With only three weeks left until the album was to be released, West called in legendary producer Rick Rubin to assist him in completing five months worth of work (the New Music Entertainment reports), in which Rubin discusses Kanye’s essence as an artist much bigger than the confines of the label as a Hip-hop artist.

Here’s what Rubin had to say: "He is a true artist who happens to make music under the wide umbrella of hip-hop. He is in no way beholden to hip-hop’s typical messaging musical clichés. Hip-hop is a grander, more personal form because of his contributions, and hopefully his work will inspire others to push the boundaries of what’s possible in hip-hop."

Although the album has some aspects of R&B as well as Kanye rapping throughout much of the record, this album pushes the boundaries of hip-hop and calls in a finer musical output which is a breath of fresh air. Although an avid fan, I haven’t heard his album fully yet mainly because I intend on purchasing it when it releases, but saying that upon listening to the singles I can hear elements of punk, techno (especially Daft Punk), and soul throughout. This is going to be a big hit for many people as I prepare myself for a summer of enjoyment and studying of another great piece of work by self-professed ‘Steve Jobs of entertainment, and fashion.’

To Wear a Helmet or Not To Wear A Helmet For BC's Bicyclists.

The bicyclists of Vancouver have said it, bike fines are unnecessary.

In the past four years 13,154 helmet violation tickets have been given out, and only 1,711 paid for reports The Province Newspaper. You may be wondering why?

It seems like if you’re infuriated by this stat you may need to be thrown in a mental asylum or running ICBC. Most of the rest of the world, including most of Canada, do not have this law in place. At a fine of $29 the non-confrontational bicyclists of Vancouver are pointing to the non-sense of it all. There is no need for a helmet law anywhere, at all anymore. This law is now functioning as a money collector for the Canadian government, and not serving a purpose anymore. With a staggering 84% of tickets unpaid since 2008 this law most definitely won’t be around for much longer.
The only thing is that a ticket unpaid means the cyclists cant renew their driver’s license or get new insurance under ICBC. Although this may not deter people whose only form of travel is by bicycle in the city.
As a cyclist myself, I feel that it should be an adult’s choice to choose wear a helmet or not. Although this is debate in which each side is equally right in their own opinions.
I’ll leave you with this debate point for getting rid of the law:

“Being aware of what is around you at all times and staying out of the swerve-zone of texting and distracted motorists is far more important than a styrofoam hat. Wear one if you like, but safety doesn't stop with strapping on a helmet.

Having said that, riding in a car is more dangerous than cycling per hour so why no motoring helmet debate?
